American Airlines suspends 6 routes because of high jet fuel costs
American Airlines is temporarily cutting select routes as the war in Iran pushes jet fuel prices higher, joining other carriers scaling back operations to offset rising costs.
The airline told CBS News on Wednesday that it has adjusted its August and September schedules for “select routes.” A spokesperson said the changes are tied to higher fuel costs and are not permanent.
“American is not suspending any routes indefinitely as part of this adjustment,” the spokesperson said.
The affected routes being temporarily cut include:
* Los Angeles to Cleveland
* Los Angeles to Columbus
* Los Angeles to Pittsburgh
* Los Angeles to Washington Dulles
* Charlotte to Ontario
* Charlotte to Sacramento
Jet fuel typically makes up about 25% to 30% of an airline’s total operating costs, according to industry analysts. The ongoing Iran war has tightened global oil supplies, increasing expenses for carriers. Some airlines have responded by raising fares, adding fuel surcharges, or cutting less profitable routes.
American Airlines said it will rebook affected passengers on other flights or offer refunds.
Other airlines are also adjusting. Delta Air Lines recently raised baggage fees, citing “evolving global conditions,” while KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Lufthansa have both announced route cuts tied to higher fuel costs.
