Ben Gurion Airport Expected to Remain Open if Fighting With Iran Resumes
According to a report by Channel 14, unlike the previous two rounds of fighting, the 12 day war and Operation “Roar of the Lion” during which Ben Gurion Airport was shut down as soon as hostilities began, current assessments indicate that Israel’s airport is expected to remain operational even if fighting with Iran resumes.
The main reason is the dramatic decline in Iran’s missile-launch capabilities. The 12 day war began with barrages of roughly 100 missiles, while Operation “Roar of the Lion” opened with volleys of dozens of missiles. Now, Israeli assessments are that Iran is no longer capable of launching large-scale barrages and could likely fire only a limited number of missiles at a time, perhaps 10 to 15 at most.
As a result, Ben Gurion Airport is currently planned to continue operating, although officials stress that the decision will be constantly reassessed based on developments on the ground.
The expectation is that Israeli airlines will continue flying, while many foreign carriers that recently resumed service to Israel would likely suspend operations again if tensions escalate.
