Former NYC Mayor reflects on past police budget cuts and safety measures.
Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on ‘Defund the Police’:
“In retrospect, the whole concept of defund the police made no sense. It made sense to say, ‘How can we do better?’”
“We gotta do a lot more for young people to give them positive alternatives, because that’s good for the police too, that’s good for safety too. We’re not disagreeing. This is amazing.”
“So defund was a mistake, and I understand where it came from, but it was a mistake.”
In July of 2020, then-Mayor de Blasio approved a $1 billion cut to the NYPD’s budget in the wake of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis. De Blasio seems to be singing a different tune now.
