Charter Plane Crash Kills 8 Near Remote Radar Site in Western Alaska
A civilian-contracted charter aircraft carrying eight people crashed near a remote radar site in western Alaska, killing all on board.
The Cessna 441, operated by Anchorage-based Security Aviation, took off from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and headed toward the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site Airport, about 450 miles west of Anchorage. The crash occurred shortly after noon.
The flight carried two pilots and six passengers on a mission for the Pacific Air Forces Regional Support Center, which manages the remote radar network tracking airspace in the region.
U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Robert Davis expressed condolences for the loss of the dedicated professionals. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the cause of the crash.
