New Chicago Police Chief Charged With Stealing Confiscated Guns and Selling Them to Pawn Shop

New Chicago Police Chief Earl D. Mayo has been charged with multiple felonies after authorities accused him of stealing firearms that had been confiscated as evidence in police investigations and selling them to a pawn shop in Hobart. He is also accused of illegally possessing anabolic steroids.
Mayo, 45, of Merrillville, faces seven felony charges, including theft, official misconduct, attempted obstruction of justice, and unlawful possession of steroids, along with one misdemeanor theft charge. A second suspect, Tanika Roshawn Borders, 47, is also charged for allegedly helping him.
According to prosecutors, the investigation began in late April after police traced a firearm used in a case back to a pawn shop sale. Authorities allege the gun had been seized as evidence in a criminal investigation but was later sold by Mayo himself, even though he had been the arresting officer in that case.
Further investigation reportedly revealed that additional weapons linked to cases may also have been taken and resold. Police also allege Mayo attempted to recover some of the weapons and asked another officer to retrieve items from his home, including suppressors.
Investigators say Borders tried to assist Mayo by attempting to recover weapons from the pawn shop and handling steroid vials found at his residence.
Mayo is currently being held in jail in Ohio pending extradition to Lake County.
