Just In – Colombian President Gustavo Petro Provisionally Suspended Until Election Runoff
Colombia’s Comisión Legal de Investigación y Acusación has provisionally suspended President Gustavo Petro from office, effective immediately until June 21, 2026, at 4:00 p.m.
The resolution was issued today as a procedural measure in an ongoing investigation into alleged undue political interference. Authorities accuse Petro of using public statements and social media posts to influence the 2026 presidential election campaign, violating rules that bar sitting presidents from intervening in electoral processes.
The commission has ordered official notification to Petro or his representative, the Administrative Department of the Presidency for enforcement, and the Public Ministry. The interlocutory decision allows no appeal.
This temporary suspension comes just days before the presidential runoff election on June 21. Although constitutionally barred from seeking re-election, Petro has drawn scrutiny for his comments supporting certain candidates and criticizing others.
The move represents a significant escalation in the lower house commission’s probes into the president’s conduct during the electoral period.
