DHS Investigates Border Patrol Official Over Alleged Antisemitic Remarks
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has opened an internal investigation into senior U.S. Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino after reports that he made antisemitic comments about Minnesota U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen, who is a frum Jew.
According to multiple reports, Bovino allegedly mocked Rosen’s observance of Shabbos during a January 12 phone call, used the phrase “chosen people” in a derisive manner, and questioned how religious observance could align with law enforcement responsibilities.
The inquiry is being led by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection investigator. Officials say the review does not indicate that wrongdoing has been confirmed.
Rosen has previously said that combating antisemitism was a key reason he accepted his current role.
Bovino had previously served as the public face of Operation Metro Surge, an immigration enforcement crackdown in Minnesota that drew national attention after two US citizens were fatally shot by federal agents within two weeks. He was later removed from leading the operation following the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
In response to the growing controversy, President Trump sent ‘Border Czar’ Tom Homan to take control of the operation and announced a reduction in the roughly 3,000 federal agents deployed across the state.
