Historic low in illegal crossings attributed to enforcement-focused approach
DHS touts 10 straight months of zero illegal aliens released at border as crossings plunge
The Department of Homeland Security said Thursday that Border Patrol agents have not released any migrants into the U.S. interior for 10 straight months, citing historically low illegal crossings. February data showed U.S. Customs and Border Protection recorded its tenth consecutive month of zero releases, which the agency attributed to an enforcement-focused approach.
“Ten straight months of ZERO illegal aliens released at the border. President Donald Trump promised to secure the Border, and that is a promise we delivered,” former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement. “We have the most secure border in American history. Our borders are CLOSED to lawbreakers.”
CBP reported 26,963 encounters nationwide in February, down 22% from January and 88% below the Biden administration’s monthly average. At the southwest border, agents made 6,603 apprehensions, 92% below the three-decade average and 97% below the December 2023 peak under Biden. Daily apprehensions averaged 236, a 95% drop from the previous administration.
Drug seizures rose sharply, with more than 79,000 pounds confiscated nationwide, the highest monthly total since October 2021. Fentanyl seizures jumped 67% from January, and marijuana, methamphetamine, and cocaine seizures also increased significantly.
