Deadly Fire Destroys Popular Dominican Republic Beach Resort, Killing Italian Tourist and Forcing Mass Evacuation
A massive fire ripped through the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel on Friday, June 19, 2026, claiming the life of a 46-year-old Italian woman and injuring several others while displacing nearly 1,700 guests from the luxury beachfront property.
The blaze broke out around 11 a.m. local time in the resort town of Bayahibe, located in La Altagracia province on the southeastern coast between Punta Cana and Santo Domingo, a favorite destination for American and international tourists. Drone and eyewitness footage captured intense flames engulfing multiple buildings, with thick black smoke billowing into the sky as high winds whipped through the area and accelerated the spread across palm-thatched roofs.
Francesca Valentino, a 46-year-old Italian tourist, died from smoke inhalation, according to the Dominican Republic’s emergency service. Three people were hospitalized, while six others received treatment on site for injuries. The victims included guests, staff, and first responders. Among the evacuees were 177 children and 21 infants.
Fifteen firefighting units responded to the scene and managed to contain the fire later that day. Guests were quickly moved to safety on nearby beaches before being relocated to other hotels and authorized facilities. The adjacent Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace resort sustained no damage and continued normal operations.
Authorities, including a special commission, are investigating the cause of the fire. Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, which operates the property in partnership, stated that local emergency officials, along with regional fire departments, worked swiftly to bring the situation under control. Displaced tourists are receiving assistance with relocation, alternative accommodations, and arrangements for their return home.
