France’s top court blocks social media ban for under-15
France’s Constitutional Council blocked a bill aimed at banning social media access for under-15s, citing infringements on freedom of expression. The legislation would have forced social media platforms to shut down existing accounts for users under 15 and require age verification.
The Council stated the bill lacked clear conditions for age verification and disproportionately affected freedoms and privacy.

French lawmakers approved this bill in July, making France a leader in Europe on this issue, following Australia’s similar legislation.
President Macron has ordered a revision of the bill, aiming for reform before the spring of 2027.
