Hegseth Ends “Gun-Free Zones” on U.S. Military Bases
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has signed a major directive overturning the longstanding restrictions that effectively banned personal firearms on U.S. military installations.
Framing the move as a restoration of Second Amendment rights, Hegseth declared that “our military installations have been turned into gun-free zones—leaving our service members vulnerable and exposed. That ends today.”
The new memo shifts the burden of proof to the military brass: installation commanders are now directed to approve requests for personal carry with a “presumption of approval.”
If a request is denied, commanders must provide a detailed written explanation.
Hegseth specifically cited past tragedies at Fort Stewart, Holloman Air Force Base, and Pensacola Naval Air Station as evidence that service members need the ability to protect themselves on post.
“In these instances, minutes are a lifetime,” Hegseth noted, “and our service members have the courage and training to make those precious short minutes count.”
