Hilton and Becerra Maintained Early Leads as California Primary Tabulation Continues
With the votes continuing to be tallied following Tuesday’s blanket primary, the race to succeed Governor Gavin Newsom is solidifying into a clear battle for the top two spots. Under the state’s election rules, the top two finishers will advance to the November ballot regardless of party alignment.
The latest update shows Republican commentator Steve Hilton maintaining the top spot, capturing 28% of the vote. Former U.S. Health Secretary Xavier Becerra remains in a strong second place position at 25%, keeping him on track to secure a spot in the general election. Progressive billionaire Tom Steyer holds third place with 20% of the vote, while Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco sits in fourth at 11%.
As county election officials continue to process outstanding mail-in and provisional ballots, the gap between the top contenders will dictate whether the final November matchup shifts before the results are officially certified.
