First Reserve Battalion in IDF’s Charedi Chashmonaim Brigade Declared Operational
The Israel Defense Forces has declared the first reserve battalion of its Charedi Chashmonaim Brigade operational following a major training exercise in the Golan Heights.
The Shimon Reserve Battalion completed its first-ever battalion-level drill last week, marking the conclusion of its official establishment and operational certification. The unit is composed of soldiers from the Shlav Bet (Stage B) track—which enables older men who previously held draft exemptions to enlist—alongside Charedi soldiers integrated from other military sectors.
Recruits underwent combat training tailored to accommodate a frum lifestyle at the Chashmonaim training base, and the battalion is scheduled to absorb future graduates from the brigade’s regular service track.
Military officials indicated that the Shimon Battalion is expected to be deployed to the northern front in the coming months based on operational needs. The brigade’s formation is part of broader IDF efforts to expand Charedi enlistment while demonstrating that combat service can coexist with strict religious observance.
