Iran Tells Mediators Re-Opening of Hormuz Is Still Limited – WSJ
Iran has told mediators it will keep limiting the number of ships allowed through the Strait of Hormuz and charge tolls during the remainder of the cease-fire, officials familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal.
Vessels will need to coordinate with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which could still block ships from countries Iran considers hostile. Tehran is also pushing for a new post-deal management system for the strait in talks with the U.S. that would let it collect tolls, they said.
“Only some commercial ships will be allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz on the condition of paying tolls,” said Mahmoud Nabavian, a conservative lawmaker and member of the negotiating team engaged with the U.S. in a post on X. Ali Khezrian, member of Iran’s National Security Commission in Parliament, later confirmed fees would continue to be charged.
The possibility of Iran’s permanent role in the administration of the waterway has alarmed the Gulf’s other energy producers, who rely on the strait for most of their exports, as well as to energy consumers across Europe and Asia.
