Defense Ministry Clears Landmines Along Jordan Border to Build New Security Barrier
Israel’s Defense Ministry has launched extensive landmine clearance operations in the eastern sector along the Jordanian border to clear the path for a new security fence.
The operation is being conducted jointly by the Borders and Seam Administration and the National Mine Action Authority, who are working to clear large tracts of land to enable the construction of a multi-kilometer security barrier. Clearance and construction efforts are being carried out simultaneously.
More than 60 heavy engineering vehicles and approximately 120 mine clearance specialists are deployed across four separate sections along the designated route, working to remove landmines, unexploded ordnance, and legacy munitions.
Operations are taking place under harsh field conditions—including rugged terrain, dry riverbeds, and difficult-to-access zones—requiring close coordination with security forces and continuous tactical adjustments.
According to Defense Ministry officials, the project is a central component of Israel’s strategy to strengthen security and reinforce its strategic presence along the eastern border. The initiative is overseen by Defense Minister Israel Katz and Defense Ministry Director General Maj. Gen. (res.) Amir Baram, with project direction under Brig. Gen. Eran Ophir in coordination with the Engineering and Construction Division and IDF Central Command.
