Jackson Township begins crackdown on illegal rental properties
Jackson Township says it is cracking down on illegal rental properties, months after promising strict inspections. Mayor Jennifer Kuhn told News 12 the findings so far are “shocking,” confirming some homes are being used as boarding houses.
Photos from a property inspected Monday show a single-family home divided to house far more people, with coded and keypad locks on bedroom doors.
Late last year, the township approved a $100 annual fee per property to fund inspections through a new Bureau of Rental Housing and Inspection. Kuhn said most rental owners are out-of-town LLCs, and violations can bring heavy fines or prosecution.
Inspectors aim to check about 50 homes per week, taking about 10 months to cover more than 2,000 rentals.
Real estate agent Troy Davis said some residents are frustrated, citing a client who wants to sell over concerns about overcrowded homes. Others support the inspections, saying they want to trust their surroundings.
On the first day, about half the homes inspected had violations, including one serious enough to involve police. Kuhn said the case is under investigation by the Jackson Police Department and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
