Judge Ruchie Freier Halts Bike Lane Construction In Crown Heights

New York Supreme Court Justice Rachel (Ruchie) Freier, a frum woman from Boro Park, issued a temporary restraining order Wednesday, freezing further work on a protected bike lane project along Kingston and Brooklyn Avenues in Crown Heights.

The order follows a lawsuit filed by resident Yosef Wolf against the city, the Department of Transportation, and DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn, alleging the agency skipped required notifications and certifications before breaking ground.

A stretch of Kingston Avenue between East New York Avenue and Winthrop Street was already completed. Remaining work on Brooklyn Avenue, Rutland Road, Fenimore Street, and a loop around Wingate is now paused.

DOT says it consulted Crown Heights Shomrim, Hatzalah, and the Crown Heights JCC beforehand. A hearing is set for September 16.
