Lakewood Leads New Jersey in Births for Fifth Straight Year 🔥
According to data from the New Jersey Department of Health, Lakewood Township recorded 5,355 live births in 2025, the highest total of any municipality in the state.
This marks the fifth consecutive year that Lakewood has led New Jersey in the number of births, with the township surpassing 5,000 births annually since 2021.
Statewide, New Jersey saw 99,721 babies born in 2025. Lakewood accounted for 5.3 percent of that total. The township also represented more than half of all births in Ocean County, which recorded 10,715 births for the year.
The figures reflect a slight decline from 2024, when Lakewood had 5,420 births out of 101,357 statewide. Despite the modest drop, Lakewood maintained its dominant position, far outpacing larger cities such as Newark.
Lakewood’s exceptionally high birth numbers stem from its unusually young population. Nearly half of the township’s residents are under the age of 18, a demographic profile driven largely by its substantial Orthodox Jewish community, which maintains high fertility rates. This youthful structure continues to fuel sustained population growth through natural increase, even as broader state and national fertility trends show moderation.
