MK Meir Porush: “System Releases Terrorists Due to Prison Overcrowding While Pursuing Yeshiva Bochurim”
Following a State Comptroller’s report that revealed a shortage of incarceration spaces, the release of security prisoners to the Gaza Strip, and delays in prosecuting detainees, MK Meir Porush sent a strongly worded letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and to Ministers Yoav Katz, Itamar Ben Gvir, and Yariv Levin, sharply criticizing the law enforcement and judicial system.
In his letter, Porush wrote that he read the State Comptroller’s report on prisons, inmate release, and prosecution of security prisoners following the “Iron Swords” war “with shock.” He argued that the findings represent not only a severe security and systemic failure, but also a harsh public and moral indictment of the state’s priorities.
According to him, the report paints a disturbing picture in which Israel is facing a shortage of thousands of prison spaces. Due to this situation, “terrorists—unlawful combatants who participated in massacres and terrorism—are being released back to the Gaza Strip, sometimes without political authorization.” At the same time, he claimed, the law enforcement system is delaying for months the filing of indictments even against those involved in the October 7 massacre.
Porush further argued that while “the system fails in handling the most dangerous enemies,” it is acting with severity toward yeshiva Bochurim. He questioned how a state claiming it lacks prison space for terrorists can suddenly allocate resources, manpower, and facilities to arrest yeshiva Bochurim and lomdei HaTorah.
He described this as a “moral and systemic contradiction,” claiming that terrorists are released due to overcrowding while enforcement agencies are harsh toward religious students whose only “offense,” he said, is learning Torah.
Porush called on the government to immediately redirect enforcement priorities and resources toward imprisoning, prosecuting, and punishing terrorists, and to stop what he described as a campaign against the Olam HaTorah and its Bochurim.
