New bill proposed in Israeli Knesset by MK Rothman requires court and panel approval to indict top officials
Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee Chairman MK Simcha Rothman has introduced a new legislative proposal modifying the procedures required to investigate or indict senior public figures. The draft covers top-tier positions including the prime minister, cabinet ministers, lawmakers, and judges.
Under the proposed rules, the attorney general would need to secure explicit permission from a district court before a criminal investigation could be opened against any of the specified senior officials.
Furthermore, moving forward with an actual indictment would require secondary approval from a newly designed special committee consisting of a retired judge and two private criminal defense lawyers.
Rothman stated that the additional layers of review are intended to introduce necessary oversight regarding prosecutorial authorities, ensuring elected leadership can execute their public duties effectively.
The text was advanced in committee after merging ten separate private bills into a unified version, positioning the legislation to move to the Knesset plenum for its first reading.
