New Jersey Assembly and Senate Advances Bills to Protect Immigrants and Personal Data
The New Jersey General Assembly and Senate have both advanced three bills designed to strengthen protections for immigrant communities and personal data.
1. One bill would codify the state’s Immigrant Trust Directive, stopping police from questioning or detaining people based solely on citizenship or immigration status.
2. The Privacy Protection Act limits how government agencies collect and share sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, immigration status, and other personal data.
3. The Law Enforcement Officer Protection Act requires officers to identify themselves during official duties, with exemptions for tactical operations or emergencies.
All three bills passed with strong Democratic support and now head to New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill’s desk for her signature.
