Grubhub and Dexa Launch New Jersey’s First Drone-Powered Food Delivery Program
A historic three-month pilot program has launched in Green Brook, New Jersey, marking the first time commercial drone technology is being used for food delivery in the state.
The initiative is a collaboration between Grubhub, the food tech platform Wonder, and Dexa, a leading drone manufacturer and FAA-certified air carrier.
Operating out of Wonder’s Green Brook facility, the service allows eligible customers within a 3-mile radius to select drone delivery for orders from 15 different restaurant concepts.
The program utilizes Dexa’s DE-2020 aircraft, a fully automated drone designed to bypass ground traffic and deliver meals in under five minutes.
Once an order is prepared and secured by a flight crew, the drone follows a pre-approved, optimized flight path directly to the customer’s home. Upon arrival, the drone does not land but instead remains airborne, using a controlled tether system to lower the food package safely to the ground.
This service is currently available through the Grubhub app at no additional cost beyond standard delivery fees, featuring real-time GPS tracking and arrival notifications.
