New York City Announces Four Billion Dollar Plan to Repair the BQE
Mayor Zohran Mamdani has introduced a multi-billion dollar initiative to rehabilitate the municipal portion of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway known as BQE Central.
The 1.5-mile corridor, which features the triple cantilever structure beneath the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, is currently two decades past its original design life. It carries more than 130,000 vehicles daily, making it a critical commuter route for the area.
To prevent crippling traffic disruptions during construction, the project avoids a total tear-down in favor of building temporary highway structures. Municipal transportation planners intend to construct a two-level temporary roadway above Furman Street alongside an elevated connection near the Brooklyn Bridge approach toward the Manhattan Bridge.
Environmental reviews are scheduled to begin soon, with physical construction expected to break ground around the end of the decade. The decade-long rehabilitation effort aims to extend the structural lifespan of the highway for another forty years while maintaining its current two-lane configuration.
