The Truth About New York’s 50-Foot Buffer Zone
At the start of the legislative session, the proposal was for a 25-foot buffer zone outside houses of worship. Governor Hochul’s budget also included 25 feet.
Kol Yisroel led by Shmulie Hartstein believed that wasn’t enough and advocated for a 100-foot buffer zone, organizing 10 trips to Albany, bringing students, parents, schools, and community members to meet directly with lawmakers. The effort even garnered support from Congressman Mike Lawler.
Assemblymember George Alvarez (D-78) and Senator Monica Martinez (D-4) introduced 100-foot legislation that gained bipartisan support, while Senator Sam Sutton (D-22) continued to champion the issue and played a major role in helping move it forward.
The final result? 50 feet. Double the original proposal.
