NY ranked second-worst in the US for package theft, as porch pirates snatch $1.2B in deliveries
Porch pirates stole more than $1.2 billion worth of deliveries from New York households in 2025, making the state the second worst in the U.S. for package theft, according to a study.
Across the country, SafeWise’s 2025 U.S. Package Theft Report estimated about 104.3 million unattended packages were stolen from homes, apartment buildings, and mailrooms, totaling roughly $14.9 billion in consumer losses from around 90.8 million theft incidents. New York accounted for 7,828,212 thefts and about $1.29 billion in losses, and also had the highest household incident rate at 965 thefts per 1,000 households.
California ranked first overall with $1.54 billion in stolen deliveries across 11,824,411 incidents. It also placed third in household rate at 837 thefts per 1,000 households, behind Pennsylvania at 944.
Texas came in third with $1.19 billion in losses and 6,011,349 incidents, followed by Florida with $984 million and 6,417,831 thefts, and Pennsylvania with $661.9 million and 5,231,008 incidents. Michigan, Ohio, Georgia, Illinois, and North Carolina rounded out the top 10, together totaling more than $2.18 billion in losses across 15,448,384 cases.
