3 million New York residents to receive $2 billion in tax relief checks
About 3 million New York residents will receive tax relief checks in the coming months, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Tuesday.
The checks, issued through New York’s School Tax Relief (STAR) program, will go to homeowners and co-op and condo owners to help offset school taxes.
Hochul said the $2 billion program will provide relief as residents face higher costs for gas and groceries, particularly seniors on fixed incomes.
Most homeowners with incomes below $500,000 will receive between $350 and $600, while seniors with incomes below $110,000 will get between $700 and $1,500.
The payments will benefit 572,000 families on Long Island, 474,000 in New York City, and 397,000 in the Mid-Hudson Valley.
“With that money, you can maybe fill up your gas tank, hopefully more than once, and make a couple of car payments and get some groceries and buy some school clothes,” Hochul said.
The checks are timed to arrive when school taxes are due. New York City residents can expect payments by mail or direct deposit later this month, while residents in other parts of the state will receive them throughout the summer and fall.
