Ocean County Police Launch “Goal: Zero” Traffic Crackdown to Combat Rising Fatalities
Police departments throughout Ocean County will join a statewide traffic safety initiative this weekend focused on reducing the growing number of deadly crashes on New Jersey roads, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.
State officials reported that 179 people had been killed in traffic incidents across New Jersey as of May 15, 2026, with 13 of those deaths occurring in Ocean County.
The “Goal: Zero” enforcement campaign is scheduled for Sunday, May 17, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The operation will include the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office along with municipal police agencies from across the county.
This month’s campaign honors Robert T. Tobias, a 23-year-old Manchester Township patrolman who was killed on May 17, 1975, after being struck by a vehicle during a traffic stop on Route 70. Tobias was the first officer from the department to die in the line of duty.
Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said the mission of the campaign is to prevent avoidable tragedies on local roadways.
