1 Dead, Dozens Injured After Explosion at Staten Island Shipyard in NYC
One person died and nearly three dozen first responders were injured after an explosion and fire at a Staten Island shipyard, according to FDNY officials.
The fire was reported around 3:30 p.m. Friday at 3075 Richmond Terrace between Lockman Ave and Andros Ave. Emergency units were initially dispatched for workers reportedly trapped inside a structure at the dockside facility, where a fire had broken out in the rear of the shipyard.
Officials said a major explosion occurred shortly after 4 p.m., followed by a second blast while emergency personnel were inside conducting search operations. The second explosion injured multiple firefighters and worsened conditions inside the structure.
FDNY confirmed that one worker died in the incident, while another survived but was injured. A total of 34 FDNY members were injured, with some suffering serious blast-related trauma.
Investigators are still working to determine what triggered the explosion and how the fire developed inside the shipyard. Explosions in industrial settings can produce powerful blast waves that travel through confined structures, increasing the risk of structural damage and internal injuries, especially in enclosed or metal-framed waterfront facilities.
