Pentagon Blocks Anthropic From Military AI Work Over Security Concerns
Anthropic said Thursday the Defense Department has designated it a national security threat, banning the company from doing business with the U.S. military. The label calls Anthropic a “supply-chain risk to national security” and requires the Pentagon and its contractors to stop using its AI services for defense purposes.
The Pentagon had been negotiating with Anthropic and other leading AI companies to expand military AI use. CEO Dario Amodei sought assurances the technology would not be used for deadly autonomous weapons or mass domestic surveillance. Amodei said the company disagrees with the designation and will challenge it in court, stressing shared goals with the Pentagon in advancing national security.
Until recently, Anthropic was the only AI firm cleared for classified Defense Department networks. After the announcement, OpenAI and Elon Musk’s xAI reached agreements to provide AI services on classified networks, potentially replacing Anthropic’s Pentagon business.
Amodei said the ban does not affect contracts with military suppliers for non-defense work. Anthropic partners with major tech firms like Amazon and Microsoft, many of which hold Pentagon contracts. A senior Defense Department official said the decision is effective immediately to ensure the military can use technology for all lawful purposes without vendor restrictions that could put warfighters at risk.
