Pentagon Raises Israeli Espionage Threat Assessment – More Details
As part of its report that the Pentagon has raised its assessment of Israeli espionage activity against the United States to “critical,” The New York Times reported that U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, the Pentagon’s top policy official, Elbridge A. Colby, and senior Defense Department official Michael P. DiMino IV were among those targeted.
According to NBC’s original report, the main reason for the heightened counterintelligence assessment is growing tensions between Israeli and American officials over how to proceed in the war with Iran and its proxy terror groups.
The assessment included a seven-page threat brief and charts, NBC reported. The New York Times said the decision to raise the threat level came after U.S. personnel operating in Israel reported that software capable of tapping their communications had been installed on their phones.
The Israeli Embassy in Washington called the espionage allegations “completely false,” with a spokesperson saying, “Israel does not gather intelligence on American entities, let alone U.S. government officials.”
A White House official told NBC the report was “false and sourced to someone who doesn’t have any knowledge of what’s going on.”
