Judge overturns Quebec order targeting Belzer mosdos in Montreal
A Quebec tribunal has overturned a government decision that would have shut down three Belzer educational institutions and ended their public funding, providing a major legal victory for 582 talmidim enrolled in the mosdos.
The government had moved to revoke the institutions’ operating licenses over several alleged violations. Officials cited concerns about the amount of time devoted to secular studies, a lack of teachers proficient in both English and French, the use of educational materials that had not been approved by the government, and issues involving emergency exits.
The mosdos’ administrators challenged the decision, arguing that it was based on “incorrect factual assumptions, inconsistent analysis and a disproportionate measure.”
They initially sought an injunction to prevent the closures while the case was being considered. The Quebec Administrative Tribunal instead went further, overturning the government’s decision in full.
