Moscow reportedly proposed a quid pro quo to the U.S., offering to stop sharing intelligence with Iran, including the locations of U.S. military assets in the Middle East, if Washington stopped providing Ukraine with intelligence on Russia.
Two people familiar with the talks told Politico that Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev made the offer to Trump administration envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner during a meeting in Miami last week. The U.S. rejected it, they said. All officials cited were granted anonymity due to the sensitivity of the discussions.
Russia has made other Iran-related proposals that the U.S. rejected, including moving Iran’s enriched uranium to Russia, according to another person familiar with the discussions.
Since the war began, Russia has expanded intelligence and military cooperation with Iran, including providing satellite imagery and drone technology to help target U.S. forces, according to reporting by The Wall Street Journal, which the Kremlin denied.
The U.S. continues to share intelligence with Ukraine despite scaling back other support. It briefly paused exchanges last year after a tense Oval Office meeting between Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, causing disruption among allies.
The Kremlin said Thursday that U.S.-mediated Ukraine peace talks were “on hold.”
