Russian Strikes Kill Four in Dnipro, Hit Apartment Buildings in Kyiv
Russian attacks across Ukraine killed four people in Dnipro and damaged two apartment buildings in Kyiv early Tuesday, authorities said, after days of warnings that Moscow was planning a major assault.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a suspected missile strike on a 24-story apartment building caused a collapse, with people likely trapped under the rubble. At least 14 people were injured across the city, he added. A fire broke out in the Podil district on the grounds of a non-residential property, and a nine-story apartment building burned after debris apparently hit its roof. In Obolon, cars caught fire after being struck by falling missile debris, and there were fires at two open locations, including one near a kindergarten. Thousands of residents took shelter in metro stations and other facilities as air raid alerts covered most of the country.
In Dnipro, four people were killed and 16 injured, regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha said. All the injured were hospitalized in moderate condition. A two-story building was partially destroyed, and several apartments in a four-story building were damaged.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned on Monday that a “massive strike is possible,” citing ongoing intelligence warnings, and urged residents to remain alert. He said Ukraine’s defenders were on duty 24/7 with available supplies.
Russia recently said it planned “systematic strikes” on Kyiv targets linked to Ukraine’s military and decision-making centers, following a drone strike it blamed on Ukraine in occupied Luhansk that killed 21 people, which Ukraine denied. In Kharkiv region, at least six people, including an 11-year-old girl, were injured in shelling.
The war, ongoing since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, has seen Ukraine target Russian oil facilities while Russia hits Ukrainian infrastructure, with both sides denying civilian targeting. Peace efforts have stalled.
