Spanish Police Raid Ruling Socialist Party HQ Over Alleged Illegal Financing

Civil Guard agents executed a surprise raid on the Madrid headquarters of Spain’s ruling Socialist Workers’ Party under judicial orders. The search is part of an ongoing National Court investigation into suspected financial wrongdoing, bribery, and illegal financing.

The raid, ordered by Judge Santiago Pedraz, focuses on a suspected ring designed to manipulate judicial processes affecting the ruling party. Specifically, investigators are looking into the actions of party member Leire Díez and several other individuals on suspicion of influence peddling, bribery, and forging commercial documents.

The operation delivers another significant political blow to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, whose government faces a widening series of corruption scandals. Separate court investigations are currently hounding Sánchez’s inner circle, including allegations of influence peddling against his wife and brother, as well as a separate probe into former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero regarding a 2021 government airline bailout.

The raid took place while Sánchez was in Vatican City for an audience with Pope Leo XIV. Addressing the unfolding situation, Sánchez delayed his scheduled press conference to review the details and broadly promised that the party would fully cooperate with the judicial system, adding that they would act with decisive force against any proven irregularities.
