Just In – Suspected Iranian Spies Arrested After Trying to Breach UK Nuclear Submarine Base
Two suspected Iranian spies were arrested on March 19 after attempting to drive through the main gate of HMNB Clyde, the United Kingdom’s primary nuclear submarine base in Scotland.
The pair, a 34-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman believed to be Iranian nationals, were turned away at the secure entrance but then lingered suspiciously in the area. Armed Ministry of Defence Police and officers from Police Scotland quickly intervened and detained them.
Sniffer dogs were brought in to search their vehicle for possible explosives or other prohibited items. The suspects were arrested on suspicion of espionage-related offences.
HMNB Clyde, also known as Faslane, houses the Royal Navy’s Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarines and serves as the heart of Britain’s nuclear deterrent. The attempted breach has raised serious security concerns at a time when British intelligence agencies have warned of increasing Iranian espionage activities targeting UK military and critical infrastructure sites.
Both individuals remain in custody while investigations continue to determine whether they were acting alone or as part of a wider network. Further updates are expected as the probe progresses.
