Trump recently praised al-Sharaa, saying he “does not like Hezbollah” and arguing Syria would do “a better job” than Israel at confronting the Iran-backed terror group. He also criticized Israel’s military campaign in Lebanon as too prolonged and costly in civilian lives, while urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to exercise greater restraint.

Reports say Damascus remains unwilling to move against Hezbollah unless Israel first withdraws from territory it captured in southern Syria after the fall of Bashar al-Assad. Israeli officials have reportedly dismissed the idea, questioning Syria’s willingness and ability to dismantle Hezbollah, while Lebanon has also rejected any deployment of Syrian forces on its territory.
