Travelodge Apologizes to Jewish Guest After ‘Free Palestine’ Message Appears on Hotel Room TV
A 24-year-old Orthodox Jewish tourist from New York was left shaken after a “Free Palestine” message popped up on his television screen upon entering his room at the London Manor House Travelodge in Finsbury Park, north London.
Sruly Fogel, who was visiting the UK for a friend’s wedding, turned on the TV in his room and saw a welcome greeting that included the political slogan. He recorded the moment, and the video was shared online by the Jewish safety group Shomrim. The hotel is located near Stamford Hill, home to Europe’s largest strictly Orthodox Jewish community.
Fogel reported feeling uncomfortable, noting his visibly Jewish appearance and what he described as a cold reception from staff during check-in. The incident occurred earlier this month and quickly drew attention amid heightened concerns over antisemitism in the UK.
Travelodge launched a thorough internal investigation, reviewing CCTV footage, system logs, and checking every TV in its network. The company found no evidence of staff involvement and reported the matter to the police. London police closed their inquiry without identifying who entered the message.
Travelodge CEO Jo Boydell personally spoke with Fogel to apologize unreservedly. The chain expressed regret for the distress caused to him and the wider Jewish community, describing the incident as unacceptable. In response, Travelodge announced plans to introduce antisemitism awareness and cultural sensitivity training for staff in partnership with Jewish organizations.
