Alleged 9/11 mastermind’s long-awaited trial scheduled for 2028

The self-proclaimed “mastermind” of the 9/11 attacks will stand trial on June 5, 2028, a military judge ruled Wednesday, nearly 25 years after the attacks that killed almost 3,000 people.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged head plotter, and three of his alleged co-conspirators have been held at the Guantanamo Bay military base in Cuba since 2003 in the long-delayed case. Mohammed was captured in 2003 and has been held at Guantanamo since 2006.

“Trial on the merits shall begin on Monday, 5 June 2028,” Lt. Col. Michael Schrama ruled.

Government prosecutors had requested a January 2027 trial, but Schrama rejected the bid, saying it was too soon, and set the trial for June 5, 2028.
