Trump Administration Expands Probe Into Race in Medical School Admissions
The Trump administration has expanded its investigation into the use of race in university admissions, targeting three major medical schools and warning that federal funding could be withheld if they do not comply.
In letters sent this week, officials requested seven years of admissions data from Stanford University, Ohio State University, and the University of California, San Diego. The request seeks detailed records on admitted students, including test scores, race, ZIP codes, and internal communications about diversity policies. Schools were given a deadline around April 24 to respond.
The Justice Department said the inquiry will examine whether race played a role in admissions decisions, including through essays or other factors that could serve as proxies.
The move is part of a broader effort to enforce the Supreme Court’s ruling in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, which limited the use of race in college admissions. Universities say they are reviewing the requests and maintain they comply with anti-discrimination laws.
