The administration has repeatedly reversed course on AI safety reviews, foreign access to advanced AI models and restrictions on NVIDIA chip sales to China. Washington is increasingly concerned that China may be only about six months behind the U.S. in developing advanced AI models. Officials fear that a narrowing gap could give Beijing more powerful capabilities, including for cyber operations targeting American military networks and critical infrastructure.
