Top White House officials fear that New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan have obtained audio recordings from inside the Situation Room, one of the most secure environments on Earth.
According to an explosive Axios report by Jim VandeHei and Mike Allen, aides to President Donald Trump believe the journalists secured the tapes for their forthcoming book, Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump, scheduled for release on June 23.
An unnamed administration source expressed deep anxiety over the potential security breach, stating, “We’re afraid some of our most sensitive conversations were being recorded, and we have no idea which ones.”

The article featured verbatim, heavily quoted accounts of high-level figures—including Vice President JD Vance, Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and White House Counsel David Warrington—speaking candidly during an unannounced July 2025 meeting.
The precision of the dialogue has led senior aides to conclude that the reporters are working from actual audio files rather than memory or leaked notes, triggering an internal scramble to determine who may have compromised the room’s security.
