U.S. forces identified at least 10 mines in Strait of Hormuz – CBS
A recent U.S. intelligence assessment found that American forces identified at least 10 mines in the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. officials familiar with the matter told CBS News anonymously.
In March, CBS News reported that U.S. intelligence at the time assessed there were at least a dozen underwater mines in the strait. Officials then said Iran was using Maham 3 and Maham 7 limpet mines, though another U.S. official put the figure at fewer than a dozen.
CBS News said it could not determine what type of mines are included in the latest assessment.
Earlier this month, the U.S. military began routing commercial vessels through a path in the Strait of Hormuz farther from Iran, along a route the Navy has spent weeks clearing. Officials warned that using the usual passage could be “extremely hazardous” due to mines reportedly laid by Iran. The Pentagon also released a graphic this month stating Iran had placed new mines in the strait on April 23.
