U.S. Robocalls Skyrocket Past 4.3 Billion in July as Scammers Target broader Audiences
Robocalls in the U.S. reached staggering new levels in July, with consumers receiving over 4.3 billion automated calls, a 15% increase compared to October of last year. According to experts, the surge is largely driven by thousands of small telecommunication carriers operating with minimal oversight, serving as direct gateways for scammers to reach millions of phone numbers.
Unlike past scams that primarily targeted elderly populations with Medicare fraud, 50% of robocalls last month offered fake pre-approved loans. This pivot expands the target demographic to younger adults and families experiencing economic stress. Furthermore, scam tactics are evolving alongside technology, with fraudsters increasingly utilizing realistic AI voice cloning to trick victims.
To stay protected, experts recommend using call-blocking apps, hanging up on unfamiliar numbers, and establishing secret family codewords to verify urgent pleas for financial help.
