UK Approves US Use of Bases for Strikes on Iranian Missile Sites
The UK has approved the use of its bases for the United States to strike Iranian sites targeting the Strait of Hormuz. Prime Minister Keir Starmer authorized American access to RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.
Diego Garcia offers a strategic advantage for long-range bombers such as B-52s allowing strikes on Iran without the need for mid-air refueling while RAF Fairford has long served as a forward hub for US aircraft deployments.
The move expands on previous arrangements that allowed US forces to operate from British bases to prevent attacks on British interests. Ministers agreed the authorization could now include protecting shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Starmer said the measure is limited and defensive, aimed at neutralizing Iranian missile depots and launchers that threaten allies and shipping. British forces will not take part directly, and Downing Street said the principles behind the UK’s approach to the conflict remain the same.
