US House Passes War Powers Resolution on Iran, 215-208
The U.S. House of Representatives voted 215-208 on Wednesday to direct President Trump to end unauthorized U.S. military hostilities with Iran.
The resolution invokes the 1973 War Powers Act, requiring withdrawal of forces within 30 days unless Congress declares war or authorizes continued action. It passed with near-unanimous Democratic support and a few Republican votes.
Earlier this year, Republicans blocked three other war powers resolutions. The most recent ended in a 212-212 tie, which Democrats hailed as evidence that opposition to the war was growing.
In the same vote series, the House approved a motion to bring forward legislation providing aid to Ukraine. The vote came after a discharge petition reached the required 218 signatures on May 13, allowing supporters to bypass Johnson and GOP leadership.
Rep. Kevin Kiley, a former Republican now serving as an independent, joined all Democrats and two Republicans, Reps. Don Bacon of Nebraska and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, in signing the petition.
The measure now heads to the Senate. Trump is expected to veto it, and overriding the veto is considered unlikely.
