US Labor Market Suffers Sharp Job Loss in February

The U.S. labor market took a sharp and unexpected turn in February, losing 92,000 jobs, according to the latest report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

This figure came as a major blow to economists who had forecasted a modest gain of around 60,000 positions.

The unemployment rate edged up to 4.4%, a slight increase from 4.3% in January.

This contraction follows a briefly encouraging January where 126,000 jobs were added (revised down from 130,000), but it seems that momentum has stalled.

Several factors are being cited for the downturn, including significant strike activity in the healthcare sector and continued workforce reductions in the federal government and information technology.

Average hourly earnings saw a modest increase of 15 cents, or 0.4%, bringing the average to $37.32.

While wages are still rising, the overall cooling of the labor market is raising concerns among analysts about the broader economic outlook, especially as the year 2025 was already noted as the weakest for job growth since the pandemic.
