Over 750 US servicemen have been wounded in Iran war, Pentagon numbers reveal – WaPo
The number of US servicemen killed or wounded in the Iran war rose to 774 after the Pentagon added a new round of injured troops in recent days, the Washington Post reported Friday.
Of the 774, 18 were killed and 756 wounded, according to the Pentagon’s casualty reporting system.
The numbers rose despite an ongoing ceasefire between Washington and Tehran, though they may reflect a lag between injuries being documented in the military’s medical system and appearing in the casualty database, the report said.
Although the ceasefire expired Monday, large-scale combat has not resumed, and the US is reportedly considering reducing its military presence in the Middle East. The pullback would include defense cuts in the Persian Gulf and not rebuilding bases damaged by Iranian attacks.
The report comes two months after several servicemen said their injuries were more severe than their designations indicated, creating a rift between the Pentagon’s disclosures and troops’ accounts. One sergeant said he “absolutely believed” the Pentagon tried to downplay the Kuwait strike that killed six US soldiers.
