American reveals makeover of narrowbody fleet with new tech, more premium seats
American Airlines plans to overhaul its entire narrowbody fleet, adding more room for many passengers and new technology for everyone.
New and refurbished planes will feature larger 4K seatback displays with more personalized entertainment options through additional partnerships. Seats will also have Bluetooth connectivity for passengers’ own headphones and fast-charging USB-C outlets. American also plans to partner with satellite internet provider Starlink.
“From next-generation seatback entertainment at every seat to substantially more premium seating options, these enhancements will give our customers more ways to relax, stay connected and enjoy their journey,” said Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden.
American plans to add more First-Class and Main Cabin Extra seats to its renovated planes, offering more room and comfort to passengers who pay for it. The airline did not say how the changes will affect total seat counts or how many regular economy seats will remain.
The changes have already begun on the existing fleet, with new planes adopting the new layout. About 800 narrowbody aircraft, meaning single-aisle planes with up to six seats per row, will be affected.
Beginning in 2028, all new Airbus and Boeing aircraft will feature the new seats and additional premium seating. American expects the upgrades to be completed across the targeted fleet by the early 2030s.
