ICE puts forward insurance plan to protect local officers making immigration arrests
ICE has proposed helping local police officers trained and deputized to enforce federal immigration laws pay for liability insurance that could protect them from financial consequences if accused of misconduct while on duty.
Under the plan, officers could obtain professional liability insurance covering up to $500,000 for legal fees, settlements and judgments, depending on the policy. ICE would reimburse up to $250 annually for the insurance cost.
The launch timeline is unclear.
ICE is considering hiring a contractor to support outreach, training and communications for its partnerships with local departments under immigration law. The contractor would hire an insurance vendor and process reimbursements.
ICE asked for industry feedback by later this week.
