NJ Transit to reportedly charge more than $100 for short train ride from New York’s Penn Station to MetLife for World Cup games
Soccer fans taking the train from New York City to New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium for the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer could face triple-digit fares.
NJ Transit plans to charge more than $100 for round-trip tickets from Manhattan’s Penn Station to the stadium during matches, The Athletic reported Tuesday. The 18-mile trip typically costs $12.90.
An NJ Transit spokesperson told The Independent that match day prices have not been finalized, but said regular commuters will not bear the cost. “The overall cost to the agency is approximately $48 million for the eight matches,” the spokesperson said, echoing the governor’s position.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill addressed the issue Monday, saying officials worked to ensure World Cup transportation costs would not fall on state taxpayers or commuters.
MetLife Stadium will host eight matches in June and July, with tens of thousands expected to rely on trains, according to The Athletic.
The report comes days after Massachusetts officials said tickets between Boston’s South Station and Gillette Stadium will cost $80 on match days.
